Greenwich Square - Historical Timeline

Those that live nearby to construction sites are often interested in the works taking place. Back in 2013 a neighbour of the Greenwich Square development, Richard Sylvester, visited the site to meet Mace's Community Engagement Manager, Michelle Baker.

Michelle discovered that Richard is both a story teller and historian. An opportunity therefore presented itself for Richard and the project team to work together to create a legacy not only for the community, but for site operatives and other stakeholders visiting the site. Michelle and Richard therefore began to create a historical timeline, documenting the fascinating history of the Greenwich Square site.

After months of visiting archives and local heritage centres, the team learnt that the site was first marked on the map as a field over 200 years ago, called “Catts Brains”. Originally a site where market gardeners grew fruit and vegetables, it has since been a workhouse, an infirmary, a hospital and soon to be a state-of-the-art blend of homes and public facilities.

The team at Greenwich Square has installed story boards on the site hoarding for all stakeholders to learn about the history of Greenwich Square.
